A Canning Vale freight company has been fined $20,000 (plus $1591 in costs) over an incident in which an employee was injured by a reversing forklift.
Massena Pty Ltd – trading as Star Freightlines – pleaded guilty to failing to provide and maintain a safe work environment and was fined in the Perth Magistrates Court yesterday.
Massena employed around 30 people at a transport yard in Karratha. Freight is transported from Canning Vale to the Karratha depot, from where it is delivered to clients.
In February 2011, the Karratha depot manager and two delivery drivers were working at the Karratha depot.
The two delivery drivers were engaged in a conversation about five metres from one of their trucks when the depot manager drove a forklift from a shed to the rear of the truck.
