16th December 2013 The official opening of the new department ‘Worksafe New Zealand’ has taken place on 16th December and aims to transform New Zealand-wide attitudes and performance in workplace health and safety. As part of this, the new ‘WorkSafe New Zealand’ website has been launched which features information and guidance, notifications forms, news research and lots of other useful information see www.business.govt.nz/worksafe
Worksafe is the new workplace health and safety regulatory agency in New Zealand; the Government’s decision to establish a stand-alone agency was in direct response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy in 2012 and the Independent Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety in 2013.
WorkSafe New Zealand carry out the health and safety functions previously carried out by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and earlier the Department of Labour. We also carry out new functions as described in the WorkSafe New Zealand Act 2013.
